Why We Vote - Danielle Roberts

Danielle Roberts | @DaniRNI

Danielle Roberts, activist and academic on women's political participation in Northern Ireland, told us why she is voting in this year's general election.

Why vote?

Voting is a way to have a say in shaping policy for our society. It is far from the only way to be politically engaged, but it is a relatively quick and easy one! Don’t limit your political participation to voting, get active too.

What will you be voting for?

In Northern Ireland we still don’t have access to free, safe, legal abortion. We also don’t have marriage equality. Our law on sex work puts workers in danger. Human Rights issues like these, which Westminster has ultimate responsibility for, are the key issues for me.

Who would be your fantasy MP and why?

My fantasy MP would be someone who is passionate about social justice, who understands people’s struggles and doesn’t get bogged down in divisive issues, which is common in Northern Ireland. I suppose Clare Bailey and Mhairi Black are examples of the sort of person I want as my MP.
